In this talk I discuss the influence of Leo Tolstoy on Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Wittgenstein read Tolstoy’s Gospel in Brief at a crucial point in the development of his ideas, and this had a significant influence on both the structure of the book and the spirit that informs it.
