Peter Singer
彼得•辛格（Peter Singer）教授为当代知名伦理学家，美国普林斯顿大学（Princeton University）荣休教授，曾任普林斯顿大学爱拉•W•迪坎普生物伦理学讲席教授（Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics）、国际伦理学学会主席。长期从事伦理学理论与应用伦理学研究，在国际伦理学界和国际哲学界享有崇高的学术声望。其代表作Animal Liberation、Practical Ethics等专著均为当代伦理学研究领域中的经典作品。
讲座摘要
There are two senses of the word “ethics,” first, referring to the guiding reasons or principles for one’s (morally relevant) actions. And second, referring to the field of study of such reasons and principles. This lecture will consider several possible grounds for believing that ethics, in one or other of these senses, is not important, and will show that these grounds do not stand up to critical examination. Instead, it will argue that ethics is important in both of these senses, and that, especially today, because of the immense amount of avoidable suffering that exists in the world, ethics is even more important than it was in earlier times. That trend, for ethics to increase in importance, can be expected to continue as new technologies develop and raise further ethical problems.
